1970 Ford F100 4x4
1970 Ford Trucks: F-100
Ford continued to lead the charge of pickup trucks with more options and attractive features for the new decade. It would prove to be a vital evolution for the pickup truck, as the 1970s would challenge the auto industry in ways nobody could have foreseen.
New concerns over vehicle emissions, vehicle safety, and by the end of the decade, fuel economy, would forever change the course of the automobile, and the cost - at least temporarily - would be horsepower.
For a society accustomed to big power, finding a way to make the pickup more than just a heavy duty work machine would become a work-in-progress throughout the decade, starting with 1970.

What's New For 1970
1970 saw the introduction of an important nameplate that still exists on the F-Series today.
The Ranger XLT slotted in above the Ranger as the new top-of-the-line Ford pickup, featuring luxuries such as full interior carpeting, a sound-absorbing headliner, bright interior trim with woodtone inserts, and up-level exterior décor such as a woodtone tailgate panel. That's not to say the lower trim levels were left behind; chrome front bumpers also became standard F-Series equipment for 1970, helping the lineup gain a few points in aesthetics.
1970 F-Series Model Lineup
F-Series models for 1970 included the F-100, F-250, and F-350. Styleside and Flareside beds were available in all models. A Crew Cab was offered in the F-250 or F-350, while four-wheel drive was available for the F-100 and F-250.
Four trim levels were available across the entire model lineup, including the entry-level Custom, Sport Custom, Ranger, and Ranger XLT. These trims primarily reflected differences in cosmetic additions, with items like air conditioning or power steering still considered options over and about the highest trim level.
Available in 1970 & 1971 was an available Electric Power Pak. This was an underhood generator that provided 110/120V AC power. From the 1970/71 dealer brochures:
Electric Power Pak provides regular household current (110/120 volts) for your electric tools right on the job site. This underhood 2500-watt generator set is driven by it's own one-cylinder 5.5-horsepower air-cooled engine. Ford's optional Electric Power Pak is very handy for those in need of on-the-job portable electrical power for a wide variety of power tools, and for camping.
1970 Ford F-100 Explorer with 19 miles
We are pleased to present a number of photos in this article of a 1970 F-100 Sport Custom with the Explorer package whose color is... Explorer Green. It was featured in the Ford display booth at the SEMA trade show in 2008. It was provided to them by National Parts Depot. All photos shown on this page are of this truck.
It is a 100% original truck and it was like going back in time. Yes, it has just 19 miles on the odometer. That is not a typo. What an amazing truck, we were stoked to get the chance to check this truck out in person. Here are some photos of a 40+ year old truck in brand new, off the showroom floor condition, enjoy:
Engines / Powertrains
The 240 cubic-inch inline six cylinder provided the standard power across the entire F-Series line, with the manual three-on-the-tree serving as the standard gearbox for the F-100 and F-250. The F-350 used a four-speed manual, which was optional along with the Cruise-O-Matic auto transmission on the rest of the F-Series lineup.
Popular engine options included the 302 V-8 for the F-100, with the 390 V-8 serving up the big power needs.
